Australian ski fields surpass 1m snowfall mark

12 August 2010 10:32

Australian ski fieldsAussie ski resorts are celebrating after the country's ski fields passed the magic 1m natural snow depth mark earlier this week. And weather forecasters are predicting the country could be in for a record season in terms of snow fall

Snow hits 1m mark
And there's even better news for our friends in the Southern Hemisphere as more snow is predicted to be on the way.

Officials from Snowy Hydro, the company responsible for the Snowy Mountains Scheme, have measured 104.7cm of snow at Spencers Creek, which is situated between Perisher and Charlotte Pass.

The figure reveals how fantastic snow conditions in August have revitalised the Aussie ski industry this season after a slow start in June, where only 35.9cm of snow was recorded.

Resorts that have benefited from healthy snowfalls aside from the ones listed above include Selwyn Snowfields, Thredbo, Hotham, Falls Creek and Mt Buller. Fresh snow is expected towards the end of the week.

Record season expected
Forecasters are predicting snowfalls to exceed the seasonal record established last year, when 148cm of natural snow was recorded in September.

And latest reports suggest anybody heading for an Australian ski holiday over the next couple of months will be in luck as most resorts are running a majority of lifts.
