California helmet law rejected

California helmet law rejectedThe proposal which would require snowboarders and skiers under the age of 18 to have to wear helmets in California resorts has been rejected.

Helmet or no helmet?
The Governor of California, Jerry Brown, was against the proposal making his decision on the basis that though helmets do provide protection, parents can and should make good choices for their children without the state getting involved.

This will be popular among snowboarders and skiers who love to tear up the mountain with their headphones blaring or their hair swaying in their wake. I mean what would happen to all the sick beanies if we all had to wear helmets. No, in all seriousness helmets are important and should be worn.

Brown was quoted on ESPN as saying: "Not every human problem deserves a law."

This was another attempt at passing the bill after a similar one was rebuffed by former Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

If passed the bill would have carried a $25 fine against the parents or legal guardians of the offending minor. It would also have led to signs being put up around resorts warning people about the law and the subsequent fines for flouting it.

Now, I don’t know where I stand on this. I mean they do save lives, there is no escaping this, but who wants to live in a nanny state? People should not be patronised and should be left to make their own decisions when it comes to their personal safety. In the slopes of Europe there aren’t any laws telling people to wear helmets and yet it seems that more and more people on the slopes are donning a lid.
