Fatality at Mt Buller

19 August 2010 13:40

Mt BullerA skiing trip has ended in tragedy after a 21 year old man was found dead on the slopes of Mt Buller.

Death on Mt Buller

A man from Canberra was found around at 11am local time close to St Christopher's Creek, only 1km from the busy mountain village resort.

Police believe the man left a license venue at around 10.30pm last night alone. The incident is not being treated as suspicious, as it is thought the man got lost and wandered accidentally into bushland.

The body was found by Police Search and Rescue and the Mt Buller Ski Patrol after they were alerted that a man was missing at 7.45am.

Freezing conditions are thought to be the cause of death - wind chill has brought temperatures down to -13 degrees celsius.

Patrol warnings
A spokesman for the ski resort has spoken of the unfortunate nature of the incident:

"Early indications are that he became disoriented and the extreme conditions have affected his ability to reason and he stumbled through the bush for about a kilometre before succumbing to the elements," he said.

"He was out socialising at one of the local clubs and he wasn't dressed for the extreme conditions."

The ski patrol have reminded holidaymakers of the importance of travelling in groups around the resort:

"It is extremely hard to see where you're going in a white- out. It might only be a short walk, but you really shouldn't be walking alone."
