Glacier Express accident kills one

Glacier ExpressOne person has been killed after a section of the popular Glacier Express train derailed close to the stop at Fiesch.




Accident details

Part of the train, which runs between Zermatt and St Moritz came off the tracks on Friday 23 July.

The Swiss operators who run the train, Matterhorn Gotthard Barn, revealed in a statement that a 64-year old Japanese woman died in the incident, which also injured 40 people.

It represents the first major accident with a fatality in the 80 year history of the train.

 

Investigation continues
Austrian and Swiss tourists were thought to be amongst the main holidaymakers hurt in the incident. 26 people taken to hospital were relased by Sunday afternoon, although 14 still remain under supervision.

Accident investigators have so far been unable to confirm the primary cause of the accident, although derailed carriages have now been removed from the track and the line is now running a full service.
