An Australian snowboarder has died in New Zealand after he fell down a ravine onto rocks. The Australian, 29, was a technician and was holidaying in the South Island with friends when the accident happened in New Zealand’s back country. A terrible accident He had taken his snowboard off to climb the side of Tarn Basin, behind the Mt Cheeseman Ski Area, near Christchurch, when he slipped.
The accident happened around midday on Friday and occurred when the man, who is still unnamed, and his two friends were climbing out of the basin.
One of the friends waited with him, whilst another friend went for help at the nearby ski field, but unfortunately the helicopter rescue squad were unable to reach him until 3.30pm.
The case has been referred to the coroner.
