Currently experienceing best snow season in the last 10 years with 100 year records being broken! 3m base, very quiet right now, everything open and access to back country at an all time 'GREAT'. Be warned though if you're driving - most car parks are filled in with snow!! Temps have also been significantly colder than western Alps (France) with ambient temps at around -30C at 2000m. Wrap up warm!

High Pressure ridge sitting over the west means cold & clear nights/mornings, warming slightly during the day. Will continue through mid week.

Getting really cold maybe down to -20C in resort level by Friday - but keeping the snow in near perfect condition. Well done to all involved with the La Tania 2012 Saisonnaires Challenge yesterday. Giant Slalom with free entry, free BBQ and free booze - Top effort by the ESF and all who raced (see pic)...

Great snow all over the mountain, avalanche danger still high. It's a miracle nobody has been injured nor died in a slide this year.

Chatel - Portes du Soleil

Snowing again atm in Chatel. Been foggy for the last few days with low cloud and no wind to drive it away. Once you get up above the clouds, it's freezing arse cold, a sign of the weather to come.

63.5cm of snow reported at 7am, on top of 30.5cm of snow reported yesterday at 7am, yowzas!

Chatel - Portes du Soleil

20 January 2012

It's starting to dump down (again) in Chatel. I was up in the Pre la Joux area this morning and there was at least 15cm of fresh snow fallen just this morning. Loads of snow predicted overnight so it's fat skis for the rest of the weekend.

No new snow to really speak of in a bit over a week. Meant to get a bit tonight, we'll see. Lots of rocks again. South facing slopes are pretty bare, but we are still better off than most of the USA!

Over 60cm in a day down at resort level, masses more high up, avalanche risk at max 5 out of 5, power cuts, trees down, roads blocked, piste bashers used to clear roads, limited lower lifts open only - chaos! But when the weather clears...

Sorry no time to blog last few days, 30" (76cm) Wednesday to Saturday & then New Year's eve festivities don't leave time for much.

More heavy snow Friday and Saturday but a break in the weather on New Years Day showed how much snow had fallen high up. Temps warmed up and snow heavy lower down but should be some great lines for a few days yet once it becomes more stable. This pic over in 1850 - the path between chalets being dug out is higher than the digger!

La Tania - Three Valleys

Arctic temperatures this AM (-29C) at the base & a bit warmer on the summit due to a temperature inversion. 15-20cm of snow the past 72 hours have freshened things up a tad bit, although rocks are still quite plentiful. Holiday spirit is in the air and the tourists are beginning to arrive in droves.
